Bright lights, big city

Take a look at this picture: This is what it looks like flying into Chicago’s O’Hare Airport at night, with twinkling lights all the way to the horizon. Just 100 years ago, this view from an airplane window — if commercial flight had been a thing then — would have been nearly all pitch black. It was all farmland.
