Waste from Umaro's production process could become bioplastics with R&D funding.
The US Department of Energy has awarded a $1.5 million Mixed Algae Conversion Research Opportunity (MACRO) grant to kelp-based alt-meat company Umaro Foods and Sway Innovation Co.
The funds will support the companies as they develop new processing techniques that upcycle alginate side streams (polysaccharides) from Umaro’s seaweed protein production into Sway’s seaweed-based bioplastics.
